Tuscany: trekking into the Val di Chiana’s woods

NATURE TRAIL: THE PIETRAPORCIANA PATH

When you’re in Sarteano, spend one morning walking in the Pietraporciana Nature Reserve, which lies along the border between Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana. Along the path that runs through the woods, there are plenty natural caves, going back most probably to the prehistoric age, and used as a refuge by the partisans during the war. From the beautiful village of Castiglioncello del Trinoro, you can see breathtaking views of the Val d’Orcia. From here you return through the beautiful forest of centuries-old beech trees, so unusual at such low altitudes.

How long: 8km (2-3 ore)

How difficult: easy (difference in height 250m.)

Where to eat: by Podere Pietraporciana, a refuge nestled in the woods.
